Autumn is a magical, colourful time in Southland. The native forests and rolling hills are green all year round and autumn sees the landscape picture-perfect against bright, blue skies with deciduous trees are turning every shade of yellow, orange and red throughout the region.
Autumn is also the ideal time for discovering the remote beaches and coastlines of the Catlins and the numerous short walks and waterfalls, or to spot wildlife along the Southern Scenic Route. Head over to Stewart Island to hike the three day Rakiura Track, or walk one of the multitude of short bush walks. Visit Ulva Island to see some of New Zealand’s most endangered birdlife.
Sample the fresh seafood – including the world famous Bluff oysters (in season during Autumn) in one of the many cafes and restaurants in Invercargill or dotted throughout the region.
