Getting around Stewart Island

Passengers disembark at Golden Bay. Operators will pick up those prebooked on a tour from this location.  The town centre is located in Halfmoon Bay only a 10 minute walk from Golden Bay.

There is limited infrastructure on the island with only 5 kilometres of roads providing access to a number of bays and walking tracks. There are limited numbers of rental cars, motor scooters and mountain bikes which can be hired in Halfmoon Bay, as well as a bus tour of the island.

Stewart Island is an hour’s ferry ride or a 12 minute helicopter ride from Bluff.

Stewart Island is also a 20 minute flight from Invercargill.

Visitor Information Centres

Oban Visitor Centre

The Oban Visitor Centre (The Red Shed) is located at 12 Elgin Terrace, Halfmoon Bay, only a 15 minute walk from Golden Bay. Tour and activity bookings can be made at this Visitor Centre. Rental cars, motor scooters, and mountain bikes are also available for hire.

Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre

The Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre is also located at 15 Main Road, Halfmoon Bay. Well worth a visit, this centre is home to information on the conservation projects undertaken in the region, historical information, and a wide range of souvenirs and gifts are available.

Internet and WiFi access

South Sea Hotel

The South Sea Hotel is located on the waterfront of Halfmoon Bay. WiFi tickets are available at $5 for 5mb, direct computer access is also available at $2 for 20 minutes.

Halfmoon Bay Library

Free WiFi is available at the Halfmoon Bay Library on Ayr Street. Look for the signs!

Services and Necessities

Four Square Supermarket

The Four Square Supermarket is located at 20 Elgin Terrace, Halfmoon Bay. The well-stocked, southern most supermarket in the world sells everything you need for a great stay on the island. Apart from the usual supermarket products they also sell fishing gear, hardware, beer & wine, coal and lotto.

Stewart Island Health Centre

The Stewart Island Health Centre is located on Argyle Street in Halfmoon Bay. Walk in appointments are available from 10.00am – 12.30pm daily. Outside of these hours you can either phone 03 219 1098, or page 0800 244 111 for assistance.

Oban Presbyterian Church

The Oban Presbyterian Church, located on Kamahi Road in Halfmoon Bay, was built in 1904. Services are held every Sunday at 11.00am. Visitors welcome.

St Andrews Anglican Church

The St Andrews Anglican Church, located on Excelsior Road in Halfmoon Bay, holds a monthly service. Please check the town notice board, located by the Supermarket in Halfmoon Bay, for the schedule.

Post Office

The Post Office can be found in the Stewart Island Flights depot on the Halfmoon Bay waterfront. The office is open: Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5.30pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8.30am to 5.00pm.


An ATM is available at the Four Square Supermarket in Halfmoon Bay. Please note this ATM only takes New Zealand bank cards.
