Black Shag Espresso and Eatery

136 Dee Street, Invercargill

Dion’s love of quality and craftsmanship started with coffee. From the age of 19 he has been involved in the coffee industry, from being a barista, to working with roasteries, training baristas and managing cafes. It has been a decade-long dream to open a place of his own serving and selling high quality, freshly roasted single origin coffees.

Dion is as passionate in the kitchen as he is on the coffee machine. Enthusiasm for food runs in his family, with his parents both having worked in the kitchen of his grandfather’s Italian restaurant. As a child, he was encouraged to appreciate full flavours and to taste different things together, evidence of which you will find on the Black Shag menu. Dion’s creations reflect a modern New Zealand cuisine, using fresh, local ingredients and an array of vegan and gluten free options.

The cafe itself is a collaboration between Dion’s custom woodworking and other half of the operation - Sylvie’s - love of art and design. Come and enjoy the local art and personal service of Black Shag!
