The sports-crazy culture of the south

Southland boasts world-class sporting facilities including SIT Zerofees Velodrome, Splash Palace swimming complex, Rugby Park and ILT Stadium Southland.

The sporting opportunities are outstanding. Five athletes from Southland competed in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Invercargill hosted three Rugby World Cup matches in 2011, and also hosted the UCI Junior Track World Championships in 2012.

Sport Southland actively works with schools and clubs to create opportunities for children to participate in sport providing pathways for those just wanting to get active through to high performance programmes.

Southland regularly features dynamic, high-quality artistic and cultural experiences that greatly add to the quality of life of the region.

Galleries such as The Eastern Southland Gallery, The Southland Museum and Art Gallery and the Invercargill Public Art Gallery house art collections of national and international significance while smaller galleries dotted around the region regularly feature both local and national artists' exhibitions.

The annual Buskers' Festival, The Southland Festival of the Arts, The Hokonui Fashion Design Awards, New Zealand Gold Guitars Awards, The Hokonui Moonshiners' Festival, Burt Munro Challenge and the ILT Kidzone Festival are popular events that attract both locals and visitors to the region. Quality theatres, stunning park venues and great acoustic music spaces ensure a range of productions can be accommodated.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and international shows regularly feature on the touring circuit in Invercargill. Local performers find Shakespeare in the Park, Invercargill Musical Theatre and the Invercargill Repertory Society all provide them with many opportunities for participation.
