The Rakiura Track is a 30km tramping track requiring a moderate level of fitness and suitable for tramping all year around. The entire circuit is 37 km in total (including the road sections) and can be completed comfortably in three days. The circuit follows the open coast, climbs over a forested ridge and traverses the sheltered shores of Paterson Inlet/ Whaka a Te Wera. It passes sites of historical interest and introduces many of the common sea and forest birds of the Island. The Rakiura Track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks and bookings are required all year round to stay in the huts and campsites. These must be made in advance, either online at www.doc.govt.nz or at the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre on Stewart Island.
