The trail consists of 17 sites around one of New Zealand's earliest settlements and features points of interest from the life of Sir Joseph Ward.
The Dog Island Lighthouse on Dog Island in Foveaux Strait is New Zealand's tallest lighthouse, and one of its oldest. Dog Island Lighthouse is one of the most distinct lighthouses in New Zealand.
Dog Island Lighthouse is not accessible to the public, but on a fine day it can be clearly seen from Bluff, with great views from the Foveaux Strait Walkway

Walk through thick bush to the top the Bluff Hill (Motupohue) and back down the other side. A loop can be formed with part of the Foveaux Walkway.
Dog Island Lighthouse lights the eastern approaches of Foveaux Strait about 5 kilometres from the entrance to Bluff Harbour.
