Heritage in Central Southland

Those keen to be carried back to another time will appreciate exploring the privately-owned Central Southland Museum and the Winton Heritage Trail, which takes in historic buildings and other treasures left by the region’s pioneers. Most of the 5km heritage trail is an easy stroll, but transport may be needed to reach the Winton Cemetery where many early settlers and the infamous Minnie Dean are buried. In 1895, Minnie Dean became the first and only woman to have been hanged in New Zealand after being found guilty of murdering babies that she had in her care at her “baby farm”.
