You bet yah lucky ‘cars’ it is!

Gears will be grinding, engines cranking and wheels flat-tack spinning all throughout Southland’s stunner summer. There are numerous wheel-tastic opportunities to immerse yourself in – just watch as these events speed into action!

Whether it be hot rods, motorbikes, track cycling or tractors, Southland has whatever spins your wheels, tyres and treads. Check out these ideas below to get your planning underway.  

You could spend a day out with the hulking mechanical traction engines at Edendale Crank Up Day. Or why not cheer on the Milford Mountain Classic riders as they speed along what is described as the most beautiful stretch of road in the world! Hit the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome for the elite fast and furious battle it out for the national titles at Vantage Elite & U19 Track National Championships. Be adventurous and prepare for a legs day that no doubt is thirsty and hungry work, with a unique brew + chop = entry for the Welcome Rock Brew Chop

The Lodges at Transport World are a perfect option for guests looking for a sanctuary to relax and recharge, offering uniquely themed apartment units that are spacious and packed full of supreme comfort. Although the Catlins environment is wild, this doesn’t mean guests have to rough it, Beresford Heights offers something different, perched high on a hill with your chauffeur at the helm of an ATV escorting you over farmland to the remote getaway. Further along the Southern Scenic Route in Western Southland is Tui Base Camp which caters to the more budget conscious traveller, it has onsite restaurant and bar offering a central location for exploring Western Southland.

Travelling north? Don't miss Wheels and Reels in Mossburn, which is conveniently located right along the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail.

Dubbed New Zealand's 'Classic Motoring Capital', Invercargill boasts an impressive amount of vintage car, truck and motorcycle collections at Bill Richardson Transport World and Classic Motorcycle Mecca and you can't miss a visit to E Hayes & Sons Motorworks Collection to celebrate the legend of speed himself, Burt Munro!

Looking for some bike trails to blow off some steam, you're in luck. Southland is home to some of the premier cycling trails and mountain bike tracks in the country. From the 175km Around the Mountains Cycle Trail, family friendy rides, electric bike tours, an Olympic Velodrome, to the 27km daring and fast-paced Welcome Rock Trails track and so much more.
