Around the Mountains Cycle Trail
From the urban excitement of the international destination of Queenstown to the agricultural hinterland of Southland, the Around The Mountains Cycle Trail offers an unrivalled diversity that inspires a sense of achievement and lifelong memories for any who ride it.
The 3-5 day trail can begin with a bus trip from Queenstown down to the start of the trail in Kingston, the little township on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu. If starting in Kingston, your ride will be completed with a cruise on board the iconic TSS Earnslaw Steamship back to Queenstown. Alternatively, the trail can also be enjoyed just as much when undertaken in the opposite direction. Options are also available to sample Around the Mountains Cycle Trail by either doing our guided one day ride from Walter Peak homestead to Mavora Lakes and return (with bus support / backup) or by doing an independent ride from Walter Peak homestead.
Encompassing historic townships, rural farmland, pristine waters and alpine vista views, there is a delight around every corner. Cycle alongside the Oreti and Mataura rivers, through the native tussock lands of Walter Peak and Mt Nicholas Stations, and explore the secluded Mavora Lakes, one of the awe-inspiring locations used in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, all as you enjoy the relaxed pace and ease of ride along the trail.
