Wander through red beech forest and take in the awe-inspiring views of the Eglinton valley, Lake Gunn and the surrounding mountains.
Earl Mountain Tracks Car Park, Te Anau-Milford Highway,
Fiordland National Park
This difficult 2.7km tramping track leads from the Milford Road and up the Hut Creek Valley through beech forest to the river flats.
From the 'Earl Mountain Tracks' sign and carpark on the Milford Road, the track leads to a walk wire over the Eglinton River. Once across, follow the track sign pointing to Hut Creek. After a river crossing over Mistake Creek, the track leads up the true left of Hut Creek to a clearing. Here you cross the river to the true right bank and follow the track until it emerges from the bush onto the open river flats.
Good fitness, moderate backcountry skills, and river crossing experience are required on this track. In heavy rain these rivers can run very fast and high and require extreme caution - do not attempt to cross until the water levels drop.
For experienced trampers, this track can be combined as an overnight trip with the Mistake Creek Track.
