The life of the legendary motorbike racing legend Burt Munro is celebrated every year in Southland with the Burt Munro Challenge. Motorbike enthusiasts from far and wide in New Zealand and Australia will be getting ready for ‘one hell of a weekend’ at the Burt Munro Challenge.
In 1967 Burt journeyed from humble beginnings in Invercargill to the Bonneville Salt Flats, USA and broke the land speed record (under-1000cc world record) - the record still stands today. The race has been depicted in the movie, The World’s Fastest Indian, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins.
During the challenge an array of events are held at different locations around Southland including the famous hill climb at the home of the Bluff Oysters, the beach race at Oreti Beach, Street Race in Invercargill, Speedway Spectacular, Circuit Racing and the SuperX Champs at Winton. This weekend offers something for everyone not only can you appreciate the offerings to the speed gods, you can savour the best of the south and enjoy some local cuisine, the night time entertainment and much more!
