The building is classified as Category 1 by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, indicating that it is of national significance.

The theatre, which opened in 1906, was renovated for $15.8 million in 2004-2005. The complex was transformed into a high quality performing arts and events venue with seating for 1015 people as a result of this project. It has cutting-edge technology, making it one of New Zealand's greatest live entertainment venues.
