Nokomai Station

1212 Nokomai Road, Athol

Nokomai is a historic sheep and cattle station nestled in its own valley at the foot of the Garvie Mountains in Northern Southland. Its location is well described by the original name "Glenfalloch” given to it by its first settler, meaning “hidden valley".

During its 150 years, Nokomai has only had two owners; the family of the original Scottish settler, D.A. Cameron and our family, the family of F.L. Hore, who still farm the station today. Nokomai is one of the few original runs left intact in the area and has a wealth of history attached through farming and gold mining.

Here at Nokomai, we offer our guests a unique holiday experience with a wide range of activities in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. We endeavour to give our guests a glimpse of the ‘real’ New Zealand and high country station life, something we hold very close to our hearts and look forward to sharing with you. We have an abundance of activities available right on our doorstep that can be tailored to suit any fitness abilities, length of stay and special interests. These include: farm tours that show you what high country farming is all about, trout fishing in the Mataura River which flows through the station, walking or mountain biking the trails that wind through the property, and scenic flights with Nokomai Helicopters - both locally and to more distant scenic attractions.

We also offer relaxing accommodation in four colonial style farm cottages which make up Nokomai Valley Lodge. Set amidst beautiful old trees, these cottages are available in one or two bedroom options. They each have their own veranda to sit back and relax while taking in the superb views of the valley. They also all have spacious living areas, bathrooms including laundry facilities, WiFi, SKY TV, and kitchenettes with fridges, microwaves and two electric elements. The cottages surround the old stone historic homestead, originally built in the 1870s and restored in 2000, which is the reception and dining area where guests can enjoy their meals while meeting other guests.

Enjoy a relaxing getaway nestled in a remote valley surrounded by alpine panorama, flowing rivers and high country stock or indulge in the endless activities available right on our doorstep!
