Sheep in Northern Southland

Northern Southland has always been a region of high country farming, although there are only a few original runs left intact. One of these is Nokomai Station. Get a glimpse of the “real” New Zealand high country life by staying at the Nokomai Valley Lodge and immersing yourself in station life, taking part in a wide range of unique activities in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. Plenty of other farmstays are also available throughout the region to suit every traveller.

Another great way to experience the Southland country lifestyle is to take a private guided trip with Real Country, visiting an authentic mai-mai (duck hunting hut) on a local sheep farm and having a go at cracking stock whips, shooting bows and arrows, smashing clay targets with a shotgun and target shooting with an air rifle. Or if you're looking for something slower paced, horse trekking with Rustic Rides is also a fantastic way to experience the high country.
