A large, interesting country garden - perfect for exploring and picnicking - and a self contained cottage in Northern Southland.
Brookhaven is a large, private country garden in Northern Southland. It is named after the stream that flows throughout the garden and cascades down the terrace into the pond.
Development of the garden started properly in 1994, but originated in the early 1900's with the building of the homestead. This history is shown through the large Spreading Elm, which dominates the garden.
The garden appears to have different rooms merging into one, framed formally by Buxus hedges. The orchard contains two massive Walnut trees as well as Pears, Cherries and the sought after floury cooking apples. Make your way through the maze of Pittopsrum Hedges, open the door and you will follow a path through the native section, where there are surprises that will delight at every corner. Mass plantings of Silver Pears, Maples, Malus's and an avenue of Flowering Cherries gives colour to the native planting scheme. Plants are chosen so they can flourish in the drought prone, stony soils.
Make sure to stop and play a game of chess on our giant teak chess set, which sits beside a striking fountain. Or have a picnic on the expansive lawns while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
The garden is open from 9.30am- 4.00pm during the months of September- early December for a small charge. There is plenty of off street parking, toilets, and a small cafe space where coffee, tea and muffins are available for purchase. Weddings, garden tours, and tours of our working sheep farm are all available on request.
Brookhaven Cottage is a self-contained, recently renovated three bedroom cottage with a large office. Our cottage offers a quiet comfortable retreat where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views of the farm and surrounding countryside. It has a fully functional kitchen, separate bathroom, a TV, dining table and laundry, sleeping five with a spare settee.
Please Note: Due to being located on a working sheep farm we have a no dogs rule in our garden.
