38 Blaydon Street, Waikaia

The Waikaia Commercial Hotel opened in 1881 was constructed with lumber wagoned from Tapanui, as well as timber from Switzers' first school and church. There were as many as 23 taverns in the Waikaia region during the gold rush days. By the early 1920s, there were only three of them: The Crown, The Empire, and The Commercial. Only the Commercial is left now.

The inviting atmosphere envelops you as you enter, and the pub exhibits all the warmth you have come to expect from a small rural community. The bar tables are old wool presses, and farm implements and memorabilia decorate the walls.

The hotel has an excellent restaurant with a cottage atmosphere. We are open for lunch and evening dining. Our place is a popular dining spot for locals from all over Northern Southland. Our menu offers good honest fare and value for money. In summer the Garden Bar is a popular spot for locals and visitors to enjoy catching up over a cold beer or glass of wine.
