This unique lodge and restaurant is a peaceful place, showcasing southern hospitality and local cuisine.
Glendaruel House is a spacious, much loved home that combines old and new. Nestled between Halfmoon Bay and Golden Bay, it is ideally situated to help you maximise your time on Stewart Island. Overlooking Paterson Inlet and Ulva Island, the house is bordered on two sides by uninterrupted vistas of native forest, alive with birdsong.
I offer three bedrooms; one Queen, one King/Twin, and one Single, each with ensuite. The rooms are quiet, private and guest-friendly with chairs and table, fresh flowers and a range of coffees, teas and biscuits. Relax in the upstairs guest lounge and adjoining balconies admiring the scenic views and active birdlife. If you can tear your eyes away, there is a large selection of books, movies, and music that you are welcome to enjoy. I also have WiFi, a microwave, refrigerator, and washing machine, all available free of charge - you are here to have fun, not worry about how to get things done! Start each day with a cooked or continental breakfast served in the sunroom. One of my priorities is fresh food, local where possible, cooked simply. Enjoy rhubarb from my garden, free range eggs, and freshly ground coffee.
Glendaruel's garden, a fusion of native and exotic plantings, extends over several levels and melds into the native forest , which New Zealanders call ‘the bush’. My garden has featured in many magazines such as; New Zealand Gardener, Weekend Gardener and My Home and Garden, and in the book Great Gardens of New Zealand by Derek Fell. The real highlight of the garden though is that birds love it here! Guests often comment that they have seen more birds in my garden than anywhere else on the island!
