Rakiura Museum - Te Puka o Te Waka. Our new award-winning building opened on the 1st December 2020. Situated centrally in the main Oban/Halfmoon Bay township, the Museum houses an extensive collection of items and photographs of Stewart Islands' early history.
Displays and information about early Maori settlements; mutton-birding; whaling; fishing; timber milling; mining; boat building; transport; schools and churches are all featured.
As well as an outstanding tourist attraction the Museum carries out the important work of collecting, interpreting and preserving historic articles from Stewart island's past
