Although a steep walk, this 30 minute track is rewarded with fantastic panoramic views over Paterson Inlet and Mount Rakeahua.
Horseshoe Bay Road,
Stewart Island
Horseshoe Bay the next bay northward from Halfmoon Bay, which shelters Stewart Island's main township, Oban. Horseshoe Bay can be easily reached from Oban either on foot or by car, and Lee Bay Road, the road to the official entrance to Rakiura National Park and the start of the Rakiura Track, can be found at the north end of the bay.
The bay features a large, flat golden beach, perfect for coastal activities and adventures. Not surprisingly there is a handful of holiday baches overlooking this stunning beach, but you may still find you have the entire coastal stretch to yourself.
Horseshoe Bay and Halfmoon Bay are the subject of a name mix-up by early cartographers. Horseshoe Bay is in fact shaped like a half moon, while Halfmoon Bay is more like a horseshoe.
