178 Main Road, Rakiura National Park

A two hour trail follows an old sawmill track through Fern Gully, winding along a stream flanked by beautiful ferns and cutover forest. It ends at a small, pleasant clearing with a seat; a great spot for picnicking and enjoying the birdlife of the forest. The start of the track is signposted off Main Road near Oban.

Fern Gully was one of the places where Stewart Island residents planned to hide their children in the event of an invasion during the Second World War.
