799 Cannibal Bay Road, New Haven

This easy, 20 minute return walk takes you along the beach at Cannibal Bay to False Islet, where you can climb to the top of the cliffs for the spectacular view before dropping down to Surat Bay. Return through the sand hills where the remains of a forest and moa hunters’ camp may be seen. These beaches are popular resting spots for New Zealand Sea Lions (Whakahao), which can offer some awesome photo opportunities - but take care around them! Keep a 20 metre distance from Sea Lions that are active and at least a 10 metre distance from those sleeping. If you are in a group do not surround them and never block their access to the sea.
