Local businesses – they are the heart of our region’s economy and after weeks in lockdown it is time to show them some love.

Buy Local, Stay Local, Be Local - Together Southland

In Alert Level 3, not a lot may change in your "bubble" but local restaurants and cafes are allowed to open up for delivery and/or take out service -  the same going for certain shops and stores. Check the social media pages of your local favourites to find out how you can support them at Alert Level 3, or give them a call to learn more!

If you have been waiting for your daily fix of coffee, your morning tea scone or to satisfy a craving for some other food or drink, you might be in luck as some of Southland's favourites have been busy these past few weeks setting up a way to order with contactless payment. Some are using apps for orders and some have even set up a drive-through for you to collect!

For those wanting to tick off their to-do list and get those DIY projects done, now's the time to jump online and start ordering. You could also look to buy gift cards from stores that haven't opened up yet, or treat someone else to some local goodness. Some of these ideas make up our Together Southland Bingo, which you can find below to start playing along!

Now that we're allowed  to explore further than just our neighbourhood (while still practicing social distancing) perhaps check out one or more of the following - IF you're in the area!

If you live in The Catlins, go check out McLean Falls now that the track is open again, or go for a drive out to Waipapa Point Lighthouse for one of the best scenic views.

Do you call Riverton or Western Southland home, here are some places for you to visit like Mores Scenic Reserve where you can choose 1 of 4 walks to do, all with different scenic views, take a stroll along Taramea Bay or see if there are any treasures to be found on Gemstone Beach.

Plenty of things to explore in and around Invercargill as long as you keep a 2 metres distance like taking a walk through Queens Park or perhaps a walk along the Invercargill Estuary.

Bluff is a great place to be year round, walk or bike up Bluff Hill (Motupōhue), try the Foveaux Walkway or check out the shipwrecks at Greenpoint Domain.

Stewart Island take a walk to Ackers Point and bring the kids as there is a Kiwi Guardian point nearby! There are a few other Kiwi Guardian points around Southland, go here for the others.

Gore has a range of great scenic reserves including Dolamore Park - a great place to take an easy hike through native bush, let the children play or wander through gardens.

If you're in Central Southland head to Forest Hill Scenic Reserve to get a good dose of fresh air or if you're based further North go to Glenure Allan Reserve and walk the trail that has been maintained since 1979 by Balfour School children.
