Rakatu Wetlands & Redcliff Reserve

146 Jericho Road, Monowai

These spring-fed remnant wetlands in old channels of the Waiau River have been complemented with 50 hectares of open water, created for the benefit of fish (both native and introduced trout) and waterfowl as well as protected birds species, to mitigate and remedy the adverse effects of the Manapouri Hydroelectric Power Scheme.

The Takatimu Mountains and Fiordland National Park provide an impressive backdrop to the high terraces of the Waiau Valley with these wetlands nestled on the valley floor. The reserve is home to an abundance of waterfowl - perfect for bird watching.

From the car park, 10km of walking and cycling tracks offer four different walk options, with stiles, bridges, shelters and information panels provided. For a good overview of the wetland, take the 10 minute uphill track to the lookout. An alternative 10 minute track leads to the Waiau River. There are also two longer loop tracks to choose from: the 1 hour Speight Wetland Loop and the 2-3 hour Rakatu Wetland Loop.
