See the stunning beauty of Western Southland on your thrilling journey down the once mighty Waiau as it winds its way through valleys to the sea.
This difficult tramping track between Lake Hauroko and Lake Manapouri offers huge lakes, gushing rivers, vast forested valleys, gorgeous views, native wildlife and lots of mud for experienced and well equipped trampers. There are huts along the way for travelers to stay in and over twenty wire bridges to cross on the path. You can expect tree falls, knee-deep mud, river crossings, tree roots and some rough terrain however the challenges make completing this track extremely rewarding.
During winter months, this track is often impassable and very dangerous due to snow, ice, avalanches and flooding - check the Department of Conservation website for any updates on the track conditions.
