Sinclair Miners Cottage

13 High Street East, Nightcaps

This historic miner's cottage gives insight to the daily life of coal miners and their families in Nightcaps.

Built circa 1905, this is a typical example of a coal miner's cottage of the early 1900's. While this small home with just a few rooms would have been a cramped reality for the family with five or more children, it represented a significant improvement to life in tents and sod huts that the earliest families in the 1880s had to endure.

Thought to have been built by a Mr William Guthrey, the cottage was sold to the Sinclair family in 1930. They gifted it the Takitimu Heritage Trust for restoration in 1998.

The building is kept locked, but you can obtain a key from the Nightcaps Trading Post on the main street to view inside.
