Athol Bridge - Biking - Northern Southland
Chris McLennan

Athol

Athol is a small country town that lies on the Southern Scenic Route. In the 19th century, attempts were made at gold mining on the nearby Nokomai River, but these were unsuccessful. Nowadays, farming is thriving in the area, and the area has become a popular fishing spot as the nearby Mataura River is great for brown trout fishing. The Lodge and Holiday Park is a popular resting stop for cyclists riding the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail, a 186km long journey through historic townships and rural farmland. Two purpose-built bridges for cyclists and walkers of the trail have been nicknamed the "Golden Gates," a stop here is a definite must. For a bite to eat, head over to the Brown Trout Café, and while you're here, cross the road and pay the Athol Art Gallery visit.
