Mossburn
Mossburn is a small town in rural, northern Southland, located in a very scenic area with the Fiordland mountains as a beautiful backdrop and West Dome (1,271m) and Mt Hamilton (1,487) as prominent local landmarks. The town's main industry is agriculture, with many sheep, deer, dairy and cattle farms nearby.
A large monument of a stag proclaims the town to be 'the venison capital of the world'. New Zealand's first deer farm was established nearby in 1972, and a game-processing works has been in operation since 1962. Meridian Energy has set up a 29-turbine wind farm at nearby White Hill.
The Around The Mountains Cycle Trail goes through Mossburn, and Bracken Hall and Dome Café & Bar are great places to take a break.
