Central Southland

Central Southland is 1.5 million hectares of lush, rolling farmland. The district has always thrived on agriculture, although sawmills, flax and linen-flax industries, lime works, brickworks, and tile works have all contributed to the area's economy. Today, the region offers a variety of leisurely pursuits and attractions for visitors, with highlights being trout-fishing rivers, friendly pubs, and rural accommodation that allow you to sample the farming lifestyle.

Winton, the commercial hub of Central Southland, is Southland's third largest centre. It is situated 32km north of Invercargill on the road to Queenstown and Te Anau. Wander the garden-lined main street and enjoy the many historic buildings, the variety of boutique stores, the range of great cafes, and most of all, the beauty of "The Heart of Southland".
