Day 1

Te Anau or Manapouri are the best places to begin your Fiordland adventure, so start your date weekend off in one of these tranquil lakeside towns.

If you're both keen on a bit of adventure, you don't have to go very far, as Lake Te Anau is right at your doorstep. Jet boating, kayaking, swimming, paddling, fishing, it's all possible on the second-largest lake in New Zealand. Prefer to sit back and take in the stunning scenery around you? Take a cruise and get up close to the mountains towering over you. Jumping on a seaplane might be the best way to take in Fiordland's sheer size and beauty. You can even fly and land in a secluded location. Isn't that romantic?

There are several luxury lodges and boutique accommodation in and around Fiordland. Still, since it's all about romance this weekend, we suggest treating yourself and your partner to a luxurious stay at Cabot Lodge. Relax in their spa pool overlooking Lake Manapouri and the mountain ranges, get cosy at the roaring open fireplace in the lodge's library, and enjoy evening drinks, canapes, and a delicious meal showcasing fresh and local ingredients.

Doubtful Sound

Few lakes are more beautiful and mysterious than New Zealand’s second deepest lake, Lake Manapōuri - often referred to as New Zealand's loveliest lake. The peaceful township of Manapōuri lies on the eastern…

Milford Sound

Often described as the “eighth wonder of the world”, the jewel in Fiordland’s crown, and one of the New Zealand’s top travel destinations, Milford Sound  (Piopiotahi)  was carved by glaciers…

Day 2 & 3

Time to get up and pack your bags, as it's time for an overnight cruise! Spending the night aboard a cruise in Piopiotahi Milford or Patea Doubtful Sound is the ultimate romantic trip. Breathe in the fresh air and be mesmerised by cascading waterfalls and amazing wildlife. On some cruises, you can even get spoiled with a soak in the top deck hot tub, or practice taking the plunge by jumping off the deck and into the refreshing water. With nothing else but the majestic fiords around you, the outside world will feel a million miles away, and it can all just be about you and your loved one. At night snuggle up on the upper deck and watch the myriad bright stars above. The next day wake up in one of the most beautiful places and watch sunrise before making the journey back ashore.

Cruising in Milford Sound and can't get enough of it? Then Milford Sound Lodge has luxurious chalets that are perfect for couples in need of some time out or who want to explore further.

Day 4

Fiordland is one of the world’s best walking destinations, with the Kepler, Milford and Routeburn Tracks being the most famous multi-day tracks in the area. All of them are stunning, and it's no wonder they are all New Zealand Great Walks. Don't worry if you only have one day to explore these tracks as you can do parts of it as a day trip, or there are dozens of shorter and lesser-known tracks in the area. Lake Marian Track is one of those, offering views of waterfalls and the stunning Lake Marian. If you don't mind the cold, you can enjoy a refreshing swim together in this blue alpine lake.

Feeling tired and hungry from all the walking, it's time to indulge in local delicacies when you return to Te Anau. Depending on your mood, you can get some delicious bao buns from Ditto, grab a blanket, and sit by the lake together, watching the sun set behind the mountains. Or if you're after some serious first-class dining, Redcliff Cafe delivers top-end award-winning food matched with NZ wines. Make sure you try lobster and venison, two specialties of Fiordland. This charming restaurant is perfect for a romantic dinner.

Te Anau Glowworm Caves

Experience a mysterious underground world of water rushing through caves, before drifting in silent darkness beneath the luminous shimmer of glowworms. Your trip to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves begins with a cruise across Lake Te Anau…

Day 5

With this being the last day of your romantic getaway, there are only a few more things to tick off the must-do list.

After breakfast at one of the many lovely cafes around town, such as Sandfly Cafe or Olive Tree, head to the shore of Lake Te Anau to pay a visit to the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary (Punanga Manu o Te Anau). A great place to see some of New Zealand's unique birds that are difficult to encounter in the wild.

A good old date at the movies cannot be missed during a romantic escape. Make your way to Fiordland Cinema to watch Ata Whenua – Shadowland. This short movie takes you on an unforgettable journey through our very own Fiordland, one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth. The Black Dog Bar is right next door, allowing you to enjoy a glass of wine during the movie or a scrumptious platter afterwards.

Let's finish this idyllic getaway with a highlight, or shall we say with hundreds of lights? A trip to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves begins with a cruise across Lake Te Anau, after which a small boat takes you into the darkness of the caves lit up by the luminous shimmer of glowworms, resulting in a dazzling display above you.
