Winton

Winton, the commercial hub of Central Southland, is Southland’s third largest centre. It is situated 32km north of Invercargill, on the route to Queenstown and Te Anau - providing a good stop-over for travellers. The township is named after the stockman Thomas Winton, who regularly camped in the spot when driving stock through the area in the late 1850s.

Winton is a typical Southland town, with rivers for trout fishing and rural accommodation that allows you to taste the farming lifestyle. Wander the garden-lined main street and enjoy the many historic buildings, the variety of boutique stores, the range of great cafes, and most of all the beauty, peace and quiet of “The Heart of Southland”.
