Piopiotahi Milford Sound
Often called the eighth wonder of the world, Piopiotahi Milford Sound is one of Aotearoa, New Zealand’s most iconic natural experiences. Carved by glaciers during the ice ages, this dramatic fiord is striking in any weather. Sheer cliffs rise from dark waters, waterfalls cascade from heights of up to 1,000 metres, and towering peaks pierce the sky, none more famous than Mitre Peak, which soars 1,700 metres straight from the sea.
Despite its name, Milford Sound is a fiord, formed by glacial activity rather than river erosion. It is the only fiord in New Zealand accessible by road, via the Homer Tunnel, opened in 1953. The journey itself is part of the experience, travelling through alpine passes, native forest and glacier-carved valleys.
For more than a century, Piopiotahi has drawn visitors from around the world. The 53.5 km Milford Track is often described as one of the finest walks in the world. On the water, scenic cruises provide an accessible way to experience the fiord, while kayaking, diving and flightseeing offer different perspectives for those wanting something more immersive.
