Murihiku Southland is home to five of New Zealand's Great Walks, almost half of them!

Our region offers some of the country’s most unforgettable trails: the Routeburn, Kepler, Milford, Rakiura, and Hump Ridge Tracks. These hikes are more than just walks, they’re multi-day adventures that test your body, mind and planning skills, while rewarding you with awe-inspiring scenery and unique experiences. But beyond the postcard-perfect views, you might be wondering: what’s it really like to spend days on the trail carrying all your own gear and supplies? Well, here’s the inside story!

Preparation: Every Step Counts

Before you even set foot on the trail, the adventure begins with planning. Booking huts well in advance is essential! Great Walks are popular tracks, and spaces fill up fast. Once your spot is secured, it's time to plan every detail: map your daily distances, choose your meals, and pack your bag carefully. Every gram counts when you're carrying it all yourself, and planning for every possible weather scenario is a must. Southland can surprise you with sun, rain, wind, or cold all in a single day.

On the Track: The Highs and Lows

The walk itself is a mixture of sheer joy and hard-earned challenges. Whichever walk you choose, the scenery is breathtaking: misty mountains, sparkling rivers, golden beaches, dense forests, and dramatic fiords. Wildlife often appears along the trail, from cheeky kea and waddling penguins to, if you're lucky, even a shy kiwi. Along the way, meeting fellow hikers adds joy and conversations to the journey, yet after hours of walking, exhaustion has a way of creeping in. You question why you signed up for this, curse the weight of your pack, wonder if you really needed that extra snack (the answer is always "yes"), and silently regret the decision to tackle that steep climb.

But then, as the hut comes into sight, all the breathtaking vistas you've passed fade into the background (for just a moment). This is the view that truly matters!

Hut Life: Smelly, Content and Connected

Huts are small sanctuaries at the end of a long day. Everyone is a little sweaty, muddy, and exhausted, but there's a communal contentment that makes it feel like home. Bunk beds beckon, freeze-dried meals taste unexpectedly delicious, and the shared kitchen becomes a place of stories, laughter, and camaraderie. Snorers, basic facilities, and the lack of phone reception are all part of the charm. Stripped of distractions, people connect over the shared experience, forging friendships and sharing tips for the next day or other amazing tramps.

The next morning, you wake stiff from the hard bunk beds, muscles sore from the day before, and the sounds of fellow hikers rustling about. Yet the aches fade the moment you step outside, greeted by crisp air and sweeping views of Southland's wilderness. Towering peaks, misty valleys, and the promise of the next leg of your journey make it all worthwhile. After some nutritious porridge for breakfast, you pack up, sling your bag over your shoulders, and keep moving toward the next hut or the finish line. Each day is a balance of challenge and reward, pushing you physically and mentally while surrounding you with unforgettable scenery.

The Takeaway

Walking one of Southland's Great Walks is more than a hike; it's a full-body, full-mind experience. From meticulously packing your essentials and planning for every weather, to questioning your sanity on steep climbs and connecting with fellow trampers along the way, it's an adventure that leaves a lasting mark. The huts, the people, the wildlife, and the landscapes all combine to create a sense of accomplishment that no single snapshot can capture.

Halfway through the walk, you might have seriously wondered why you thought this was a good idea, but by the time you reach the finish, you can't help but wonder where you'll go next. It's a classic hiker's trait!

So pack smart, plan well, and embrace the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Southland's Great Walks will challenge you, humble you, and reward you in ways that only a true wilderness adventure can.

While the above focuses on the self-guided experience, it’s worth noting that guided options exist for those who want to enjoy Southland’s Great Walks with fewer logistics. On a guided trek, your packs can be flown in by helicopter, your meals are prepared and waiting, and your beds are made and ready at each hut. You can still immerse yourself in the scenery, wildlife, and camaraderie of hut life, but with the heavy lifting and much of the planning taken care of, making it a different kind of adventure that’s perfect for those who want the experience without carrying the full load.
