Things To Do in Gore District
Gore District has lots for visitors to see and do, with fishing being one of the most popular! There are plenty of local fishing guides who can help you land the perfect catch. Alongside its trout-filled rivers, the district also boasts a range of scenic reserves, parks, and gardens, and various areas for sport and recreation, including golf courses, mountain biking trails, a BMX track, and the impressive Gore Multisports Complex, which is comprised of an aquatic centre, an ice rink and an indoor sports stadium.
Shop 'til you drop down Gore’s main streets or check out the Eastern Southland Art Gallery. Learn about local history through the Gore Heritage Trail, the Gore Historical Museum, the Hokonui Moonshine Museum, and the Hokonui Pioneer Village and Museum, and there are also interesting museums at Wyndham and Mataura, with the latter being housed in the historic Clematis Cottage. The Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre in Mandeville, with its display of vintage aircraft, is one of the jewels in the district’s crown - if you’re feeling particularly adventurous you can even go for a flight in one of the restored planes! Relax, picnic, and let the kids run around in the Gore Public Gardens or Bannerman Park. Or catch a film at the SBS St James Theatre. There’s something to suit everyone here.
