Waikaia
A former gold mining town, Waikaia, is progressively becoming a popular tourist destination and a fantastic holiday spot for many families. Located on the edge of the Waikaia River, the area has become a favourite spot for keen anglers. Trout fishing in this river and nearby streams is fantastic.
The Switzers Museum is worth a visit to see more of Waikaia's rich gold mining history. Next to the Museum, you can find the iconic "bottle house", constructed from approximately 20,000 wine bottles.
Other attractions are a 9-hole golf course, camping ground, hunting (DOC permits required) and a café. Gore is only a 45-minute drive away, and in about 1,5 hours, you can be in Invercargill.
