Getting to Southland is relatively easy, with several transportation options available to visitors. The most convenient way to reach Southland is by air, with direct flights available from major New Zealand cities such as Auckland and Christchurch. Waihōpai Invercargill, the largest city in Southland, has its own airport with direct flights from these cities. The airport is just 5 kilometres (under a seven-minute drive) from the city centre, making it easy to reach your destination.
Another option for getting to Southland is by car, campervan or motorhome. Visitors can hire a car at any major New Zealand airport and drive to Southland, taking in the breathtaking scenery along the way. The Southern Scenic Route is a popular driving route that takes visitors from Dunedin or Queenstown to Invercargill, passing through some of Southland's most stunning locations, such as the Catlins and Milford Sound in Fiordland. The drive can take up to 6 hours, but it is well worth it for the incredible views and unique experiences along the way. Other popular destinations, such as Te Anau in Fiordland and Maruawai Gore, are within easy driving distance of Invercargill.
For those who prefer a more relaxed journey, coach services are available to Southland. The InterCity bus network offers daily services to Invercargill and other major towns in Southland from all over New Zealand, with comfortable coaches equipped with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. These services are a great option for budget-conscious travellers, with affordable fares and flexible schedules. Whatever your preferred mode of transport, getting to Southland is a breeze, and once you arrive, you'll find yourself in one of the most beautiful and welcoming regions in New Zealand.
