Wakapatu Beach & Kawakaputa Bay

Austin Road, Colac Bay

Kawakaputa Bay is the next bay westward from Colac Bay (Oraka) on the way to Orepuki. Wakapatu is a beautiful, long sandy beach along the edge of this bay that's the perfect playground for all the usual coastal activities as well as offering stunning views of Centre Island and Stewart Island (Rakiura).

One end of Wakapatu Beach features a small rocky island that is easily accessible at low tide by walking through the shallow stretch of water between the rocks and the island. The rocks and island are exciting to explore, with rock pools where you can hunt for shells and interesting critters. Just be careful not to get caught out on the island by the tide, or the walk back might not be as much fun!
