The 240km long Mataura River flows from its headwaters in the Eyre Mountains to the south coast, and is legendary among anglers world-wide, drawn to its mythical stretches and secret casting spots.
You can picture the venue — River Terrace, it’s even better than it sounds, with room for people to spread out, relax under shady trees, and maybe throw a line into the river as it sparkles in the sun.
Celebrate everything about the river from its rich history, to its wealth of recreational opportunities. What better way to spend a long, lazy summer’s afternoon? We can’t think of one.
Learn how to tie a fly and cast a line. Some of the south’s best-known and internationally-respected fishing guides are on hand to share their knowledge with anyone keen to have a go.
The Gore District, sometimes referred to as Eastern Southland, boasts an eclectic mix of heritage, culture, and industry. Maruawai Gore is Southland’s second largest town. It is well known as New Zealand’s country music capital, hosting the Tussock Country Music Festival and NZ Gold Guitars Awards.
The town also features the world-renowned Eastern Southland Gallery, and revels in its colourful, illicit whisky-making past at the Hokonui Moonshine Museum. There are nationally significant public gardens, spectacular walkways and mountain bike tracks in the nearby Hokonui Hills, and heritage attractions.
Once you’ve had a taste of Gore, we reckon you’ll be hooked.
