Catlins Coastal Heritage Trail
The Catlins Coastal Heritage Trail is a 70km self-guided journey through the South Catlins, linking 13 heritage sites between Niagara and Fortrose. This scenic detour off the Southern Scenic Route reveals a rich tapestry of coastal history, natural wonders, and early European industry.
A Trail of Stories & Scenery
Travel through isolated beaches, fossil forests, and windswept headlands where whaling stations, sawmills, and fishing ports once thrived. From the quirky Niagara Falls to the windswept cliffs of Slope Point, each stop offers a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this rugged region.
Highlights include:
- Waikawa Museum & St Mary's Church – preserving local stories and architecture
- Curio Bay & Tumu Toka Curioscape – home to a 180-million-year-old fossil forest and interactive exhibits
- Waipapa Point Lighthouse – site of New Zealand's worst civilian shipwreck
- Fortrose – once a bustling port, now a quiet coastal village with historic remnants
