What could be better than a few days fishing the crystal clear waters of lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, and the Upper Waiau River?

The Stabicraft Marine Te Anau Manapouri Fishing Classic, held every Labour Weekend, is the perfect opportunity to soak up majestic views of Fiordland and the Te Anau Basin.

It really is a fishing competition for the whole family - with individual, adult, junior (12-17 years) and child (11 and under) anglers lining up to catch the heaviest fish.

The only decision you’ll really need to make is whether to smoke, pan fry or maybe even bake your delicious catch.

And of course every adult who catches a fish goes into the draw to win the grand prize – a Stabicraft.

The rods and reels whip into action from 2pm on the Friday, and the competition winds up at 2pm on the Sunday, with the much anticipated prizegiving about an hour after that.

One of the highlights of the weekend is the Cruise Milford Take a Kid Fishing competition held at the picturesque McGregor’s Pond, next to the Whitestone River.

Kids’ eyes light up as they spot salmon gliding through the calm blue surface of the pond, and the adrenaline rushes as the fishing line tenses while they reel in their prized catch. Smaller fish are gently returned to the water to swim another day.

The kids love delving into their goodie bags packed with all sorts of treats - there might even be a chocolate fish hiding in there.

Smiles a mile wide aren’t restricted to the kids at the prizegiving on the Sunday - with an amazing array of awards and prizes on offer.
