Day 1

Invercargill – Autumn Abundance

Morning

Start your Southland adventure with breakfast at The Black Shag Café in Invercargill. This cosy local favourite is known for its creative, seasonal dishes and warm atmosphere. Treat yourself to their autumn-inspired Apple Crumble Porridge – quick oats topped with maple-roasted apples, sultanas, gingernut and walnut crumb, and a dollop of coconut yoghurt. Prefer something savoury? Their hearty cooked breakfasts are just the thing to fuel your day.

Or instead of breakfast, head to the Invercargill Farmers Market (open Sundays) to browse the best of the region’s autumn harvest. From earthy mushrooms and crisp apples to handmade preserves and artisan breads, it’s a great way to connect with local growers and stock up on seasonal treats.

Afternoon

Spend your early afternoon exploring one of Invercargill’s most iconic attractions – Bill Richardson Transport World. This world-class museum is a treasure trove of vintage vehicles, quirky collections, and hands-on exhibits. Whether you're a motoring enthusiast or just curious, there's something here to surprise and delight everyone.

Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed lunch at The Grille, located right inside the museum. Their seasonal menu features Southland favourites with a modern twist – think roasted pumpkin salad, slow-cooked meats, and hearty soups perfect for an autumn day. Pair your meal with a local cider or craft beer for the full experience.

Treat yourself to a sweet stop at Seriously Good Chocolate Company. Just a short drive away, this boutique chocolatier is known for its inventive flavours and Southland-inspired treats. Try their whisky truffles, spiced apple bonbons, or pick up a gift box to take home. It’s a delicious way to experience the region’s creativity in edible form.

Then, take a stroll through Queens Park, the pride of Invercargill. Wander through beautifully landscaped gardens, admire the Japanese garden, and say hello to Henry – the world’s oldest living tuatara. With its aviary, playgrounds, and art gallery, Queens Park offers something for everyone, especially when dressed in its golden autumn colours. Alternatively, treat yourself to a shopping spree at Invercargill Central, the shopping centre in the heart of the city.

Evening

Wrap up your first day with a cosy dinner at Emberz at The Ascot. This inviting restaurant is a local favourite for its relaxed atmosphere and dedication to showcasing Southland’s seasonal produce. As the autumn air cools, settle in by the fire and enjoy comforting dishes like slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary jus, or a creamy mushroom risotto made with locally foraged fungi. Their menu changes with the seasons, so you’re always in for something fresh and flavourful.

Pair your meal with a glass of Central Otago pinot noir or a Southland craft beer, and toast to a day well spent exploring the heart of Murihiku.

Morning

Start your day with a scenic 30-minute drive south to Motupōhue Bluff, the southernmost town on the South Island. Known for its rugged coastline, rich maritime heritage, and world-famous oysters, Bluff is a place where the land meets the sea in a dramatic fashion. Begin your visit by taking a breath of fresh, salty air and enjoying a walk up Motupōhue Bluff Hill Scenic Reserve. This short hike winds through native bush alive with birdsong and offers sweeping views over Foveaux Strait and across to Rakiura Stewart Island. Along the way, you'll encounter interpretive panels that share the cultural significance of this site to Ngāi Tahu, adding depth to the landscape around you.

By the time you descend, you'll have worked up an appetite—and Bluff has just the thing.

Afternoon

After your morning hike, it's time to refuel with a hearty Southland lunch at Hayz at the Anchorage. This local spot is known for its generous portions and creative takes on regional favourites. Their Pāua Cheese Roll is a must-try—a delicious twist on the iconic Southland cheese roll, filled with tender pāua (abalone) and creamy cheese, grilled to golden perfection. It's a taste of the region's bounty. You can also enjoy a bowl of seafood chowder or a classic blue cod meal, all served in a relaxed, friendly setting that reflects the down-to-earth charm of Bluff.

After lunch, make your way to Stirling Point, home of the iconic yellow signpost marking distances to cities around the world. Snap a photo, breathe in the sea air, and take a moment to appreciate just how far south you've come from here. Explore the coastal walking tracks that wind along the shoreline, offering more stunning views and a chance to spot seabirds and seals.

Evening

After a day of coastal adventure and seafood indulgence, make your way back to Invercargill for a relaxed evening in the city. Whether you're in the mood for something casual or a little more refined, there's something to suit your style. If you're quick, satisfying bite, head to Esk Eats in Invercargill Central. This vibrant food court-style eatery brings together a variety of local vendors under one roof—perfect for grabbing a burger, bao bun, or something sweet. Prefer to wind down with a drink and some nibbles? Day 3

Riverton – Heritage & Harvest

Morning

From Invercargill, drive to "Riviera of the South" Aparima Riverton, one of the most popular towns in Western Southland, with good reason. Nestled along the estuary and surrounded by rolling hills, Riverton is rich in history, creativity, and kai. Autumn is a particularly special time to visit, with the town celebrating the season's bounty in true Southland style. Start your day with a hot cuppa and something sweet at Jacobs River Bakehouse. This rustic, artisan bakery is a local favourite, known for its sourdough, pastries, and warm, welcoming vibe. Grab a seat by the window and enjoy a flat white with a slice of spiced apple cake or a fresh cinnamon bun.

After these adventures, you'll be ready for a well-deserved lunch. Head to the Beachhouse Restaurant or Aparima Restaurant & Bar, where mouthwatering dishes come with breathtaking, panoramic views of the sea or the estuary. Whether it's a calm summer day or a stormy winter afternoon, the ever-changing seascape provides a stunning backdrop to your meal.

Afternoon

If your visit aligns with the Riverton Heritage Harvest Festival, you're in for a truly special experience. This annual event celebrates the region's heirloom produce, traditional food skills, and community spirit. Wander through stalls brimming with local goods, attend a workshop on preserving or foraging, and enjoy live music and storytelling that bring the town's heritage to life.

If the festival isn't on, there's still plenty to explore:

  • Step into Te Hikoi Museum, where immersive exhibits tell the stories of early Māori and European settlers, with a focus on food, trade, and survival.
  • Then, take a short drive or walk to Mores Scenic Reserve, a peaceful forested area just outside town. Wander through native bush trails lined with rimu, kahikatea, and ferns, and enjoy the birdsong and serenity of this hidden gem. It's a refreshing way to connect with the natural side of Southland's heritage.

Evening

As the sun begins to dip, settle in for dinner at the Riverton Beachhouse. This relaxed, coastal eatery is known for its seasonal, locally inspired menu and estuary views. Think mushroom risotto, local fish with roasted vegetables, or their famous seafood chowder, all crafted with care and Southland flavour.

With the sound of the tide in the distance and a glass of local wine in hand, it's the perfect way to end a day steeped in heritage and harvest before heading to your Invercargill accommodation.

Day 4

Gore - Country, Culture & Cuisine

Morning

Your final day begins with a peaceful drive inland to Mandeville, a rural gem just outside Gore. The landscape shifts from coastal curves to golden farmland, dotted with sheep and framed by poplar trees glowing in their autumn hues. Start your morning at Miss Cocoa, this charming café is known for its beautifully presented, seasonal fare. Treat yourself to Toffee Apple Tarts, or opt for a Steak Sammie paired with a locally roasted coffee. The setting is as delightful as the food—warm, rustic, and full of character.

After brunch, take time to explore the Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre. Wander through vintage aircraft displays and if you’re lucky, you might catch a heritage plane taking off from the grass runway—a rare and memorable sight.

Afternoon

Next, head into Māruawai Gore to uncover a spirited slice of Southland history at the Old Hokonui Museum & Distillery. Step into the world of 19th-century whisky makers and learn about the region’s infamous illicit distillers. The stories are as bold as the spirits themselves—and yes, you can sample a dram of Old Hokonui, a modern recreation of the original recipe.

For lunch, make your way to Capri Restaurant, a local favourite known for its warm hospitality and comforting classics. Their signature oyster soup is a must-try—rich, creamy, and full of flavour, the perfect dish to round off your culinary journey.

Evening

As the afternoon winds down, you might choose to explore the Eastern Southland Gallery, home to the John Money and Ralph Hotere collections, or take a scenic drive through the surrounding countryside. The golden light of late autumn makes for a beautiful farewell to Southland’s heartland.

For your final dinner, head to The Thomas Green Public House & Dining Room, a Gore institution that blends historic charm with modern flair. Set in a beautifully restored heritage building, this restaurant offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a menu that celebrates local flavours. Enjoy dishes like Thai Venison Salad, the Wild Food Challenge Dish, or a Creamy Mushroom Fettuccine.

Whether you’re heading home or continuing your journey, today offers a fitting end to a four-day adventure filled with flavour, heritage, and the warm hospitality of Murihiku.
