Walk Through the Heart of Southland's Oldest Inland Town

Winton Heritage Trail

The Winton Heritage Trail is a 5km self-guided journey through one of Southland's earliest inland settlements. With 14 heritage stops scattered through the town, the trail reveals stories of gold rushes, pioneering families, and the evolution of Winton from "a hole in the bush" to a thriving rural hub.

A Trail of Town & Time

Established in 1861 and named after boundary rider Thomas Winton, the town grew rapidly during the gold rush era. By 1863, streets were surveyed and named after nobility from a medieval jousting tournament—adding a touch of Scottish flair to this Kiwi town.

The trail includes:

  • Historic buildings like the old post office and police barracks
  • Homes of prominent residents who shaped Winton's development
  • Ivy Russell Reserve – a peaceful green space perfect for a stroll
  • Winton Cemetery – resting place of early settlers and Minnie Dean, NZ's only female executed criminal

The flat, easy trail can be walked in 1–2 hours or driven in 15 minutes, but allow extra time to explore the sites and enjoy the town's charm.
