Day 1

Your adventure begins in Te Anau, a town teeming with natural beauty and undiscovered gems. Start your day off right with breakfast at the Sandfly Cafe. On a sunny day, sit outside and enjoy the morning sun while devouring the local's favourite, the hash brown stack with a coffee. Wander your way through the town and down to the waterfront. A lovely, paved track takes you right along the front of the bay.

A must-visit place for lunch is Ditto; the team are passionate and imaginative about cuisine and use fresh and local vegetables to generate fuel for the soul. If you are more of a pastry fiend, why not try the best pies in town at Miles Better Pies? Known for their mouth-watering, gravy-dripping, meat-packed pies, you might want to grab a few for the road... They are just that good!

Te Anau has lots of activities to keep you entertained during the day. Take a journey into the mysterious underground realm of the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, where you will find hidden networks of limestone passageways studded with carved rock, whirlpools, and roaring underground waterfalls that make way for you to float in silence beneath the bright shimmer of glowworms. A fantastic alternative to experiencing Fiordland is to take a guided short walk with some of the knowledgeable locals.

Celebrate your first night in Te Anau by enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants. Try local specialities like a Fiordland venison burger at The Ranch Bar & Grill, served with a hint of southern hospitality. Whether you are after the ultimate Fiordland food experience at Redcliff Café, where you can try wild Venison, wild Hare, and fresh Fiordland fish matched with neighbouring Central Otago wines, or you want to dine in luxury with views of lake Te Anau this summer at the Fiordland Lodge, Te Anau had something to tantalise all tastebuds.

After a day chock full of sampling (or indulging) in some of Fiordland's local delicacies, make your way to your accommodation of choice for the night. Te Anau boasts a wide selection of picturesque camping spots right in the centre of town to luxury lodges that showcase the awe-inspiring landscape of New Zealand.
