Journey South and Explore

Start your journey with a drive from Invercargill to Bluff, or head straight to Invercargill Airport. There are a few ways to reach Stewart Island, and each one’s an adventure in itself. You can take the Stewart Island Experience ferry from Bluff for a scenic one-hour crossing, hop aboard a Stewart Island Flights plane from Invercargill, or lift off with Stewart Island Helicopters from Bluff for a bird’s-eye view of the coast.

Once you’ve landed in Oban, stretch your legs with a guided walk or e-bike tour around the island. If you’re up for something truly special, head to Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara — one of New Zealand’s few pest-free open sanctuaries. This untouched rainforest is home to rare native birds and plants, offering a glimpse of Aotearoa as it once was.

Island Eats and Nature Encounters

Dive deeper into the island’s natural wonders. Join a guided walk or hop on an e-bike to explore Stewart Island’s native bush and rugged coastline at your own pace. For something truly special, take a trip to Te Wharawhara Ulva Island, one of the few pest-free open sanctuaries in Aotearoa. This unspoiled rainforest is a haven for rare native birds and plants, offering a safe and serene environment that’s mostly unchanged by human activity. It’s a chance to experience New Zealand’s natural heritage up close, without the distractions of modern life.

After a day of exploring, refuel with lunch at one of Oban’s favourite spots: The Snuggery, Kai Kart, or the South Sea Hotel. Each offers a laid-back island vibe and hearty meals made with fresh, local ingredients.
