Catlins Southern Scenic Route
Hoiho - Yellow-Eyed Penguin, The Catlins

The Catlins Itinerary

Wild Coastlines & Waterfalls

Te Ākau Tai Toka The Catlins – is a hidden gem tucked into the southeast corner of Murihiku Southland, where dramatic coastlines crash into lush native forest. It's a place of natural wonders: waterfalls deep in cedar and rimu groves, fossilised forests revealed at low tide, and wildlife that often appears when you least expect it. Whether you're chasing epic camera shots or just keen to wander off the beaten track, a day trip to The Catlins offers a genuine taste of nature at its wildest.

Set off from Invercargill and head east into The Catlins, where wild coastlines meet lush native forest and wildlife thrives in quiet corners. It’s a region that rewards curiosity, so take your time and soak it all in.

The Journey Begins

Kick off your day with a classic Southland roadie. As you leave Invercargill behind, the landscape shifts from open paddocks to thick bush and winding coastal roads. First stop could be Waipapa Point, where the lighthouse stands tall and sea lions often sprawl across the sand. Or, if you're chasing waterfalls, detour inland to Pūrākaunui Falls, a three-tiered beauty tucked into native forest. Both spots offer a good leg stretch and a proper taste of the region's rugged charm.

Afternoon

Coastal Wonders, Local Kai & Bush Walks

By midday, you'll be cruising into Tumu Toka Curio Bay, where the coastline puts on a show. Curioscape Café is a top spot for lunch: good kai, good views, and a chance to learn about the area's natural and cultural stories. After lunch, take a wander. You might spot hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) nesting in the scrub or Pahu Hector's dolphins playing in Porpoise Bay. If the tide's right, the ancient Petrified Forest reveals its fossilised remains, it's like stepping back in time.

From here, head deeper into the bush or down to the beach. Cathedral Caves are a highlight, massive sea caverns carved into the cliffs, only accessible at low tide. A local Māori trust manages the caves, and your entry fee helps protect this special wāhi. Keen for more waterfall action? McLean Falls is a must. A short walk through lush native forest leads to a dramatic 22-metre drop, surrounded by the sounds of birdsong and lush greenery.
